Our Favourite Beer Styles

It occurred to me that if you aren’t able to visit the tap room in the week, you may not know who any of us are! To that end I thought I’d pepper in a blog every now and then about us; so you know who’s responsible for making and selling Hop Shed beer. First up – what sort of beer do we enjoy?

GOLDEN CRUMB – 4.3% GOLDEN ALE
3 KINGS - 4.0% SEASONAL STOUT

As the year draws to a close it’s time for our final two seasonals of 2025. The first is Golden Crumb, a golden ale brewed with biscuit malt (get it?) I love brewing with biscuit malt – it doesn’t suit every beer, but as the name suggests it gives a delicious digestive biscuit flavour. Alongside that I’ve gone for Ernest and Jester hops, which should result in a grassy, soft citrus, and blackcurrant flavoured beer with a rich malt accompaniment, perfect for late autumn. The second seasonal of November/December (both with be available at similar times to cater to both light and dark beer enjoyers) is the return of 3 Kings, in its third annual release; a relatively high hopping rate using Mystic gives this dry stout a fruity edge.

Following on from our “Meet our Apprentice!” blog a few months ago, it occurred to me that if you aren’t able to visit the tap room in the week, you may not know who any of us are! To that end I thought I’d pepper in a blog every now and then about us; so you know who’s responsible for making and selling Hop Shed beer. First up – what sort of beer do we enjoy?

Sarah, Owner – I always used to drink pale ales before I started brewing, but since making them I’ve really started enjoying darker beers like stouts. I prefer cask, hence starting a brewery focused on that!

Rob, Brewer – I’ll honestly try anything once, but if I have to pick one style I tend to gravitate towards hoppier pale ales; the variety of flavours modern hops provide is astonishing and new varieties are more common than ever. I usually go for the lower ABVs these days so I can try a few without feeling it too much the next day!

Tommy, Apprentice Brewer – My favourite beer style is anything dark and strong! I really like the flavours that darker malts give, so I’ll always try an imperial stout when it’s available.

Luke, Sales – I enjoy trying different ales but I’m typically a lager drinker day-to-day; when it’s available though, I’ll now choose Java over a lager! It’s got a bit more to it in terms of flavour, is super smooth, and works great as a shandy on a hot day.

Victoria, Marketing – I quite like beers that are citrusy and punchy, with a slightly higher ABV. My favourite non-Hop Shed beer is Steady Rolling Man from Deya, because it’s a perfect example of those things!

Chris, Drayman – I like strong, citrusy hop flavours; pale ales & IPAs are what I would normally go for. And any aged malt whiskey!

The Evolution of The Hop Shed

This month it will be 10 years since we did the first brew in our shiny new brewery in The Old Chicken Shed in Suckley, so it feels like a good time to do a bit of reflection on where our journey started and how far we have come in those 10 years!

Cooking With Beer

When you cook with beer, you aren’t trying to make something that tastes of beer, rather using it as one of many ingredients to give a subtle beery flavour. This is good because a recipe rarely needs a full 500ml bottle of beer so there is usually at least part of a bottle available for sipping as you cook!
